Asus ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D World’s Fastest Gaming Laptop

AMD’s 3D V-Cache is now also in the notebook. The Asus ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D is the first gaming notebook with AMD’s latest Ryzen 9 7945HX3D processor, which uses a 3D cache for the first time. There is also a GeForce RTX 4090 laptop with 175 watts, which smoothly conjures up all modern games on the fast QHD screen.

With the ROG Strix SCAR 17, Asus may not offer the most modern, but it is one of the fastest gaming notebooks on the market. We have already tested various configurations, most notably the version with AMD’s Zen4 Ryzen 9 7945HX processor and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 laptop. With the brand new ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D, Asus, in cooperation with AMD, is the first manufacturer in the world to use the new Ryzen 9 7945HX3D in a notebook, which is intended to further increase the already good gaming performance thanks to the additional 3D V-Cache.

Asus ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D – Performance with the best of AMD & Nvidia

Compared to the regular ROG Strix SCAR 17 with the Ryzen 9 7945HX, there is an important change in terms of cooling the processor. Due to the metallic surface finish of the new 7945HX3D processor, no liquid metal is used as a heat-conducting agent, but a regular heat-conducting paste. According to Asus, the TDP classification is basically the same, but there are effects on the performance.

Note: D-Notify is an Nvidia-specific feature. With the D-Notify feature enabled, the GPU will increase its power consumption based on the application/load until the GPU temperature reaches 75°C. In this case, the TGP is limited to 55 watts.

Asus ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D – Processor – Ryzen 9 7945HX3D

The basic technical data of the new AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D are identical to the regular Ryzen 9 7945HX – 16 Zen4 cores (32 threads) with a maximum clock of up to 5.4 GHz. The 80 MB cache (16 MB L2 + 64 MB L3) is expanded with an additional 64 MB L3 cache in the new model. All other technical information on this is available in our analysis of the new Ryzen 9 7945HX3D.

In contrast to the SCAR 17 with the normal Ryzen 9 7945HX, the benchmarks show that the power consumption is lower overall. We see a maximum of up to 115 watts for a very short time, which then quickly levels off at 100 watts. The missing liquid metal is already noticeable here. The benchmark results are still excellent overall, but when it comes to raw CPU performance, the regular 7945HX models have a slight edge. Overall, the performance is again comparable to the Intel HX CPUs, which only have a slight advantage in some single-core tests. However, one shouldn’t forget that the Intel chips require significantly more power both in single-core operation and especially when all cores are loaded. For comparison: Core i9-13980HX bei 170 Watt.

The processor can briefly consume a maximum of 85 watts in battery mode, but then quickly levels off at 55 watts. That’s still enough for 24,127 points in the Cinebench R23 Multi test, which corresponds to a deficit of around 26%. Single-core performance is not limited.

Asus ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D – Storage

A 1 TB SSD from SK Hynix (PC801) is installed in the ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D. The M.2 2280 SSD is connected via the fast PCIe 4.0 interface and delivers very good transfer rates. In addition, the performance remains stable even under constant load. After the first start-up, the user has 868 GB at his disposal, but thanks to the second M.2 slot (also M.2-2280, PCIe 4.0), the storage space can be expanded if necessary.

Asus ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D – Graphics card – GeForce RTX 4090 laptop

The ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D supports Nvidia’s Advanced Optimus technology. The processor’s integrated Radeon 610M takes care of the graphics calculations for simple tasks, while the dedicated GeForce RTX 4090 laptop is activated automatically for more demanding applications (e.g. games). Thanks to the integrated MUX switch, the iGPU is completely deactivated without a restart. With a maximum power consumption of 175 watts (150 watts TGP + 25 watts Dynamic Boost), this is one of the fastest versions of the RTX 4090 laptop.

There are slight differences in the benchmarks, but overall the laptops are practically on par with the RTX 4090 laptop. In battery mode, the GeForce RTX 4090 laptop can consume a maximum of 55 watts, which is still sufficient for a graphics score of 5,590 points in the Time Spy test. This corresponds to a deficit of a whopping 75%.

Now let’s move on to the gaming benchmarks, starting with the Full HD resolution. Here the new Ryzen 9 7945HX3D can clearly show its advantage in some titles and we often see advantages in the double-digit percentage range; in Far Cry 5 there is even a whopping 36% lead over the regular Ryzen 9 7945HX and the HX CPUs from Intel. In some games, however, there is no advantage, for example in Witcher 3 or Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.

Thanks to the new AMD Ryzen 9 9745HX3D, the ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D from Asus has become even faster, making it one of the fastest gaming laptops around. Especially in the 1080p resolution, the new processor can bring a double-digit percentage increase in performance thanks to the additional 3D V-Cache, but in the higher QHD resolution the advantages are smaller and in 4K there is actually no difference to the regular Ryzen 9 7945HX.

Since the new Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is not compatible with liquid metal, the maximum multi-core CPU performance is even slightly worse than the regular Ryzen 9 7945HX due to the weaker cooling performance. Ultimately, however, normal application performance is comparable and the chips are still significantly more efficient than Intel’s HX processors.

Thanks to the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D, the new ROG Strix SCAR 17 3DX has become even faster when gaming in Full HD/QHD resolution, making it the fastest gaming laptop currently on the market.

The well-known disadvantages remain, however, because although the performance is good, the design with the 16:9 panel is starting to look a bit old-fashioned. We would also like to see a more reserved ProArt version that can also be used as a workstation inconspicuously. The actually practical silent mode is also hardly usable when gaming since you can clearly hear an annoying coil whine here and we would definitely recommend headphones for the other two energy profiles. The coil whine and loud fans also prevent a better rating.
