Meta is testing reels on Quest 3 headset(Latest Update)

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has initiated testing for a new feature on its Quest 3 headset that enables users to play ‘Reels,’ the short-video feature of the Instagram app. This functionality will enable users to effortlessly browse and watch Reels videos using the virtual reality (VR) headset.

Meta is currently conducting tests to enable users to watch Reels on its Quest headset. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, shared a video on the company’s broadcast channel, showcasing how Reels would appear when viewed in virtual reality (VR).

Similar to opening other applications on the Quest system, users can navigate through Reels displayed in a window that overlays their virtual background. According to Tatin Yang, an Instagram spokesperson, the Reels will be accessible through the Meta Quest Explore feed, but initially, only a limited number of individuals will have access to this feature.

Meta’s announcement of testing the ‘Reels’ feature on its Quest headset comes approximately one week after Zuckerberg’s revelation about the upcoming ‘Quest 3’ virtual and mixed reality headset. This next-generation device will be the first mainstream headset to feature a high-resolution colour mixed reality, improved displays and resolution, and a 40% reduction in thickness. The base model will offer 128GB of storage, with an option for additional storage capacity. The Quest 3 will be powered by the latest Qualcomm chipset, delivering double the graphical performance of the previous-generation Snapdragon GPUs found in the Quest 2.

Meta described their Meta Reality technology as the pinnacle of immersive experiences on the Quest 3, allowing users to seamlessly merge their physical and virtual worlds. These new experiences transcend current mixed reality capabilities by intelligently recognizing and responding to objects in the user’s real environment, enabling natural and intuitive interactions that were previously unimaginable. The company shared these details in a blog post, with further information set to be unveiled at Meta’s Connect conference on September 27.

Priced at $499.99, the Quest 3 will be compatible with the entire library of games and apps available for Quest 2, expanding the options for users when it launches later this year. However, details regarding the integration of Reels into Meta’s Instagram app for the Quest, as well as its wider availability and testing, remain undisclosed.

Apple recently introduced its highly anticipated high-end mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, priced at $3,499. Despite its premium cost, it is likely to pose a competitive threat to Meta’s Quest headsets.

With the integration of Reels into the VR experience, Meta aims to enhance social engagement and make virtual reality more immersive. By seamlessly merging the physical and virtual worlds, they intend to provide a unique and captivating experience for users.
