Netatmo Weather Station works with smartphones

Netatmo Weather Station

We have purchased and tried a weather sensor, “Netatmo Weather Station” compatible with the app.

The device consists of two wireless modules, one for indoor use and one for outdoor use, each of which records weather data with a built-in sensor.

You can view the collected data from the app for iPhone and Android, and the website for Mac and PC.

Weather stations using wireless sensors are common overseas, but this product seems to be the first to work with smartphones.

Both modules are aluminium cylinders; the smaller one on the left is for outdoor use, and the larger one on the right is for indoor use.

Items that can be measured are different indoors and outdoors:

  • indoor module
    • temperature
    • humidity
    • barometric pressure
    • CO2 concentration
    • noise
  • outdoor module
    • temperature
    • humidity

Accessories with Netatmo Weather Station are as follows

  • USB-AC adapter used to supply power to indoor modules
  • concept adapter
  • USB-micro USB cable
  • AAA battery x 2
  • Belts and screws for fixing outdoor modules

It has been certified as “Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad” and, of course, technically qualified for domestic sales.

Netatmo Weather Station is Easily set up using the app

Neither module has a display, and setup is done from the app.

First, connect the power supply to the indoor module.

After that, we will operate according to the setup procedure of the application.

A mechanism to connect with Bluetooth only at the time of setup, and then exchange data using Wi-Fi after that.

For some reason, I couldn’t proceed at the step of connecting with Bluetooth, but when I manually connected from “Settings”, I was able to complete the setup successfully.

For the outdoor module, turn the screw at the bottom to expose the contents and insert the battery.

This module is not waterproof, so be careful where you place it.

However, in order to measure accurately, it is essential that it is not exposed to direct sunlight and that it is well-ventilated.

Monitoring anytime, anywhere with a linked app

There are no displays except for the status LED (window) of the indoor module, and the data collected by the sensor is saved to the cloud via Wi-Fi.

Data can be viewed using a free app from a smartphone or a web browser from a PC.

Below is the app summary screen.

Outdoor data is displayed on the top of the screen, and indoor data is displayed on the bottom.

This is the detailed screen.

You can see the graph of each item by laying the main unit sideways.

Data is collected and accumulated automatically and continuously, but you can take measurements on demand by touching the upper part of the indoor module.

At the same time, it displays the air condition in the room with the color of the LED, so you don’t have to open the app if you just want to check it.

Notification of ventilation timing

When we think of indoor air pollution, we think of dust and odours, but it seems that the concentration of CO2 (carbon dioxide) is also an important item.

There is a sensor that measures CO2 in the indoor module, and you can check the concentration in the room.

When you actually breathe into the module, you can see the value jumping up.

Normally, we don’t pay much attention to the CO2 concentration, but it gradually increases when there are humans (or pets) in a closed room.

Although there are various opinions about the standard, it is said that if it exceeds 3,500 ppm, it will affect the body, such as headache, dizziness, and nausea.

By the way, the outside air is around 400ppm, but I found that even at my house, it quickly reaches around 1,500ppm.

Netatmo weather station has a monitoring function that will notify you by push notification when the preset value is reached, so you don’t have to worry about missing the timing of ventilation.

Record approaching typhoon

The other day, Typhoon No. 26 approached the Japanese archipelago, but Netatmo weather station atmospheric pressure sensor clearly captured the pattern.

According to the data, it was around 7:30 am that it was closest to Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, where it was installed.

The atmospheric pressure at that time was 977.5mba (=hPa), which is the same value as the central atmospheric pressure of a typical typhoon.

It is better to get information about typhoons from the news, etc., but for those whose physical condition is affected by changes in barometric pressure, it may be useful to check the graph to manage their physical condition.

Before purchasing, I thought it was enough to know the temperature and humidity, but when I looked at the graphs of atmospheric pressure, CO2 concentration, and noise information, I found out that there was quite an interesting discovery.

Also, unlike general thermometers and hygrometers, data can be viewed and notifications can be received anywhere, so it can be used for monitoring the environment of elderly people who live far away and pets who are answering machines.

The design is sleek and doesn’t take up too much space, so you won’t have to worry about where to put it.

The price is $179 (tax included), which is rather expensive, but if you think that you can have a cloud-compatible “my hundred leaf box”, you can say that it is rather cheap.
