best smartphones in 2023

Smartphones are the absolute winners in the mobile communications market. Multimedia jacks of all trades have long outstripped normal mobile phones. With ever more powerful processors and increasing screen sizes, so-called phablets are now even encroaching on tablets. In some cases, the borders are already fluid here, at least at the upper end of the flagpole. These are usually the devices that “fight” for the coveted places in our smartphone top 10. Therefore, most current models occupy the front ranks. Here and there, however, one or the other “oldie” can hold its own in the top 10.

1st place – Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the Koreans’ top product and lives up to its ambitions of being the best smartphone. It offers a large 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED panel that works with a dynamic refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz and has a high resolution. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for the Galaxy ensures strong performance and, depending on the variant, can access 8 or 12 GB of RAM. There is a choice of 256, 512 or 1,024 GB of memory. The S Pen is also back on board.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra offers a super powerful overall package that only has a few equipment gaps.

The high-performance camera setup offers a wide range of uses, from ultra wide-angle with macro mode to 100x zoom. The video properties are not neglected. The 5,000 mAh battery helps the S23 Ultra to have a long battery life, and it is also IP68-certified again, supports wireless charging, eSIM support, USB 3.2, UWB and much more. Only Wi-Fi 7 has to be left out and the audio codec support for Bluetooth can be expanded.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra starts with the smallest storage version at 1,399$ and can be purchased directly in the Samsung shop. It’s usually cheaper on Amazon and other online retailers. However, the internet giant offers an extra year of warranty.

2nd place – Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23+

Samsung Galaxy S23

The Samsung Galaxy S23 has a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED display, which can become extremely bright and supports a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The display-to-surface ratio is also very appealing. The S23 is powered by the rapid Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, which can access 8 GB of RAM. A 128 and a 256 GB variant are available as storage solutions.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is one of the best smartphones of 2023 and its big brother, the S23+, offers one or the other icing on the cake in some areas.

The 3,900 mAh battery gives the Samsung smartphone a long runtime and the triple camera takes really good photos and videos. The compact mobile phone is rounded off by an IP68 certification and a long update supply. Only UWB and Wi-Fi 7 have to be dispensed with.

The Galaxy S23+ not only has a slightly larger display but also a disproportionately larger battery (4,700 mAh), which is why its runtimes are even better. It also has a UWB chip and can also be purchased with 512 GB of storage.

The Galaxy S23 starts with an RRP of 949 euros for the 128 GB model, and 256 GB costs 1,009 euros. Samsung likes to combine this with an additional exchange bonus in its own shopThe smartphone is cheaper in stores, for example at Amazon with a 36-month guarantee. The S23+ starts at 1,199 euros and is also available from well-known dealers.

3rd place – Apple iPhone 14 Pro (Max)

Apple iPhone 14 Pro

The Apple iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are similar in many areas. Both rely on an identical triple camera, the heart of which is the new 48 MPix sensor. They are also available with at least 128 memory and can fall back on model variants with up to 1,024 GB. Furthermore, UWB, wireless charging, MagSafe and an IP68 certification are on board.

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro models no longer have a notch, but instead rely on the Dynamic Island.

The 14 Pro has a 6.1-inch OLED display with up to 120 Hz, that of the Max smartphone is 6.7 inches. The larger model is correspondingly heavier and also has a disproportionately stronger battery, which ensures noticeably longer runtimes.

Both iPhones can be purchased directly from Apple in all colors and storage variants, but are also available from all common retailers such as Amazon.

4th place – Honor Magic5 Pro

Honor Magic5 Pro

The Honor Magic5 Pro is a powerful high-end smartphone with an impressive triple camera, a large battery, fast charging, 3D face recognition and a long update supply. It uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

The Honor Magic5 Pro is a very good Android smartphone that only has a few weaknesses.

The case is well-made and waterproof. It has a fast USB 3.2 port but does not support UWB. The smartphone comes with Google Android 13 and MagicOS 7.1 user interface. The cameras offer good results for both photos and videos. The communication properties are modern, but the smartphone does not support 6 GHz WLAN. It has good navigation functions and offers good telephony quality. The extensive scope of delivery is also positive. Overall, the Honor Magic5 Pro is a powerful smartphone with small limitations.

The Magic5 Pro can be purchased directly from Honor .

5th place – Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate

Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate

The Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate is a gaming smartphone that relies on powerful hardware to offer a premium gaming experience. It features the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and is available in different storage configurations. The smartphone’s 6.78-inch AMOLED display has a refresh rate of up to 165 Hz, and the high touch sampling rate of 720 Hz enables fast reactions to inputs.

Even in the latest version, nobody can dethrone the ROG Phone 7: it remains the best gaming smartphone.

The ROG Phone 7 Ultimate is characterized by its opulent equipment list. It features a 6,000mAh battery that ensures long playtime, as well as an external fan for extra cooling. The smartphone comes with the Android 13 operating system and the custom user interface ROG UI. Asus plans to provide two OS upgrades and provide the device with security updates for four years. The device is certified according to IP54 and is therefore protected against dust and splash water.

The ROG Phone 7 can be found in all configurations on the Asus web. shop

6th place – Sony Xperia 1 V

Sony Xperia 1V

The Sony Xperia 1 V offers a slim 21:9 display with an extremely high resolution and a peak brightness of up to 1,566 cd/m². A fast SoC from Qualcomm is just as much a part of the equipment as a waterproof and dustproof case, whose display-to-surface ratio seems a bit old-fashioned. In return, there is room for really good speakers in the wider frame and the Xperia 1 V can also accommodate an optional memory card. An audio jack also adorns the equipment list.

The Sony Xperia 1 V is a really good smartphone and scores with features that other manufacturers have already shelved.

The triple camera can shine with dynamic optical zoom and delivers very balanced shots and extensive setting options. In contrast to this is the rather weak front camera. It is also a pity that Sony’s update guarantee is comparatively short.

The Xperia 1 V can be ordered directly from Sony but is also available from Amazon.

7th place – Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 5G

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is a foldable smartphone that has a 6.2-inch AMOLED display on the outside. When it is opened, there is a 7.6-inch panel inside. Both work with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The triple camera consists of a 50 MPix sensor and is supplemented by a triple optical zoom and an ultra-wide angle.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is the technically most powerful foldable smartphone.

In the test, the Fold4 can convince with its bright OLEDs, the IPX8 certification, a fast Qualcomm SoC and long software support. However, it is quite thick when folded and the UD camera in the large panel is of rather poor quality.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is available directly from Samsung, but can also be purchased from Amazon.

8th place – Xiaomi 13 Ultra

Xiaomi 13 Ultra

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra just throws superlatives around. The 6.73-inch AMOLED display is said to be able to have a brightness of up to 2,600 cd/m², but this was not confirmed in our test. The heart of the camera setup is a Sony IMX989 which was developed in cooperation with Leica. There is also fast charging with up to 90 watts and plenty of memory.

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra leaves nothing to be desired, but it also comes at a steep price.

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra doesn’t really have to put up with a lot of criticism. Despite the great technical data, the smartphone is not the spearhead in terms of photography and the front camera does not support Ultra HD video despite the enormous resolution. In addition, at 227 grams it is anything but lightweight. But fans of the manufacturer will get their money’s worth.

9th place – Motorola Edge 40 Pro

Motorola Edge 40 Pro

The Edge 40 Pro is light and compact and offers high-end equipment including 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. It has a USB-C port with USB 3.2 speeds, NFC for wireless payments and support for an eSIM profile. The Motorola smartphone comes with Android 13 and Motorola has pledged that it will receive future updates. However, the security patches were out of date at the time of testing.

Motorola’s Edge 40 Pro shines with a strong price-performance ratio.

The Edge 40 Pro offers good camera quality with a 50-megapixel main camera, wide-angle optics and an optical zoom for close-up shots. The OLED display is bright and can display HDR content well, although it’s not outstanding in terms of resolution and brightness. The speakers deliver good sound and the phone has a variety of Bluetooth audio codecs.

The battery has a capacity of 4,600 mAh and offers good runtimes. The phone supports fast charging. Overall, the Motorola Edge 40 Pro offers a good overall package at a relatively low price.

The Edge 40 Pro is available directly from the manufacturer, but can also be purchased from Amazon.

10th place – Motorola Edge 30 Ultra

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra

The Motorola Edge 30 Ultra has a 6.67-inch pOLED display that offers a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz and a Full HD+ resolution. It is powered by a fast Qualcomm processor with 12 GB of RAM. The internal memory is 256 GB and cannot be expanded. A highlight of the smartphone is the camera setup because the Edge 30 Ultra is the first smartphone with a 200 MPix camera.

With the Edge 30 Ultra, Motorola has succeeded in creating an attractive smartphone that leaves nothing to be desired.

Among other things, the bright display convinced in the test. In addition, the Moto cell phone can be charged very quickly both wired and wirelessly and also offers very good battery life. Only a higher IP certification and eSIM support would have been desirable.

The Edge 30 Ultra can be purchased directly from Motorola but is also available from Amazon.
